Lizards and Spiders

Some years ago in school, a couple of boys in my son's school cornered a lizard and began poking it. My son chanced upon them and saw the lizard detach its tail in an effort to get away. He was enormously angry and the resultant row brought the teacher in. To his surprise, she agreed with the boys saying that lizards should be killed.
Fortunately my son had a smattering of animal facts. He informed those lizards were the cleanest of all creatures, not only completely harmless but extremely useful in the house where they destroyed far more mosquitoes and other pests than dangerous chemical mosquito repellents. The teacher tried to explain that while she was sensitive to large animals, she found the entire "lower world" difficult to understand or appreciate.
Many people feel the same away about insects, fish, and birds and thereby lose out on the wonders of 90 % of the world.
