Animal Body

E-mail Print PDF
In school you learn that biological sex is a game of X and Y chromosomes. Women have two X's, and men have X and Y. Those with sexual abnormalities and whose sex cannot be classified as male or female are hermaphrodite (the polite term is now intersexual). The word hermaphrodite is a combination of the names of the Greek gods Hermes (male) and Aphrodite (female). Humans are rigidly bound. For a man to become a woman and vice versa, it takes a series of very painful operations and the disapproval of society. But animals, god bless them, can have much more fun with their identities. In the wild, gender ambiguity is natural and practically anything goes. From protozoa to pill bugs to porgies, changing from one sex to another is a way of life. Some species will begin life as males and switch to females and others switch from female to male. Some will change sex in both directions, and others will be both sexes at the same time. Most species will only change once, but there are some species that change numerous times. The hamlet, a tropical fish, can shift back and forth between the sexes in just 30 seconds. That speed comes in handy during the hamlet's marathon sex sessions; hamlets spawn an average of 14 times in one day. Sometimes, all it takes is an environmental factor to alter one’s gender. Humans don’t need survival strategies – we are now more than 7 billion – but every other species does. For many species, it is certain that the majority of their offspring will not survive to adulthood. The solution, then, is to simply have more offspring. But this is where nature finds a limitation. While males of almost every species can produce sperm in very short order, the females, once impregnated, must wait until they give birth (or lay eggs) before they can reproduce again. For coral reef fish, evolution found an interesting solution.

Animals at social activist's house get a new lease of life

E-mail Print PDF

Mumbai: In a touching gesture, the Bombay High Court has given a go-ahead to the Pune unit of People For Animals (PFA), co-founded by Member of Parliament Maneka Gandhi, to take care of "200 to 300" rescued animals languishing in Pune's Queen bungalow of bed-ridden social worker Lila Parulekar.

Hearing an application filed by PFA seeking to intervene in an ongoing public interest litigation, Roshan Dalvi of the high court directed the Pune Police Commissioner "to provide necessary assistance and security" to the NGO to carry out activities aimed at taking care of animals housed in a shelter in Parulekar's bungalow.

Taking serious cognisance of the "obstacles" put up by the security guards employed by Sakal Papers to carry out the various animal welfare works suggested by the court on December 2, 2011, Justice Dalvi stated in her latest January 4,2012 order: "…we direct that the Commissioner of Police, Pune City shall provide necessary assistance and security to the intervener [People for Animals] to carry out the activities as permitted by this Court by order dated 2 December 2011".

The high court's January 4 order has come as a huge relief for animal lovers as it will facilitate the Maneka Gandhi-headed PFA to initiate various steps to take care of the rescued animals.

The animal shelter in question has been in operation for the last several decades and earlier it used to house around 500 animals including cats, dogs, horses, cows, buffaloes and birds. However, it has been in a state of neglect for the last few years, following the indisposition of Parulekar.

"Since November 2010, the animals have been in complete neglect and without any kind of care. The high court order should pave way for proper care of the animals and restoration of the shelter to its previous standards of love and care for the animals," Manoj Oswal of the Pune unit of PFA told Gulf News.

Non Vegetarian Parents - Vegetarian Kids

E-mail Print PDF
Why do Non Vegetarian Parents panic when their children decide to become vegetarian? Apart from being nutritionally good for the child, this article is about the enormous psychological effect on the child of taking such a decision and being allowed to see it through.

Adults walk up to me and say these things:

“My daughter reads your pieces and she wants to become vegetarian. I said nothing doing; we are not having a separate kitchen for you. So we forced her to eat meat and now she has thankfully forgotten what you said.”

“When my son told me he wanted to become vegetarian, I said, Maneka Gandhi is not a doctor and I took him to our doctor who said no, he won’t get enough vitamins. So we said no. My child became vegetarian for a few months after listening to your speech but since we were all eating meat, she then started eating it again, thank God. When my daughter wanted to be veg, I told her go and live in Maneka Gandhi’s house because this is my house and I won’t allow it.”

“I told my children that we are Muslims and it goes against the religion to be vegetarian. I told my son, I am cooking and I can’t cook extra food just for you. If you want to make your own food, you are welcome. So he didn’t become vegetarian.”

“My son told his friends that he wanted to be vegetarian but they said that’s only for girls. So he didn’t. I also told him it’s a sissy thing to do. I am supportive of my child’s vegetarianism but a lot of my friends roll their eyes upwards when I tell them about it. So I get annoyed and take it out on her.”

“I know it’s healthy but if I encourage my children to be faddist from now on, what will happen to them later. It’s just not convenient for us to have a vegetarian in the house.”

“My daughter suddenly told me she was going to be vegetarian. I thought she’s gone mad.  We ignored her for a few days and then it was O.K.”

I am sure he will become anaemic if he becomes vegetarian. As it is he is always sick. We should be broadminded and practical in our outlook. It won’t hurt to eat a piece of meat once in awhile, while they have reinforced their power on their children, do they realize that they have crushed the first major independent decision that their children have made. This is just an ordinary decision but one that will impact their entire life.

HC comes to activists’ rescue

Bombay High Court orders police to provide protection and assistance to animal lovers fighting for Jeevraksha and Lila Parulekar

Police and media persons outside Lila Parulekar’s housePolice and media persons outside Lila Parulekar’s house Members of the Jeevraksha Animal Welfare Trust were accorded some relief on Wednesday as the Bombay High Court directed Commissioner of Police Meeran Borwankar to provide protection and all necessary assistance to the activists and Animal Welfare Officers who have been fighting to preserve the shelter and its inhabitants.

In September, 2011 Pronoti Vyas, an animal rights activist from Satara, had moved the HC to get justice for sole surviving trustee Lila Parulekar and the animals she has rescued. Reports have shown that Parulekar is living in pitifully unhygienic conditions, with nearly 200 sick and infected dogs roaming freely around the house.  As per the petition, some of the activists had also noticed the bodies of dogs being dumped in an abandoned factory.

Vyas also alleged that Parulekar’s property had been taken over by a trustee of Sakal Papers Ltd. A committee was formed and an inquiry was conducted as per the HC’s orders. The committee, headed by animal rights officer Supriya Bose had submitted a report, stating that the shelter was in complete disarray and the animals were being neglected.

Following this, Maneka Gandhi personally intervened and asked that her NGO, People for Animals, be allowed to take responsibility for the animals. On December 2, 2011, the court ordered Gandhi and her NGO to take charge of the animals. However, this order was allegedly ignored by the respondents, which include Sakal Papers, the animal welfare board, advocate Sunil Kadam and others. According to activists, they refused to acknowledge the order altogether.

The activists then approached the police and were ‘advised’ them to keep out of the matter. They even approached the Commissioner Borwankar, but to no avail.
