All You Need To Know About Iron
Wednesday, 10 April 2013 01:07
Maneka Gandhi
There are so many mythologies that persist (clay pots are environmentally sound, animal protein is better than plant protein, Sweden has the highest suicide rate in the world…) in spite of a battery of science showing that these are just not true. These is specially so in the case of health. One of the myths is that vegetarians are at the risk of iron deficiency anemia because meat gives iron. Every health writer or newspaper doctor will pass on this little gem of information, and because the rest of their information is fairly true, you tend to believe it even when every major health body in the world has declared it not to be true.
Here are the facts – and those people who have diabetes which is the fastest growing illness in this country, please read this carefully.

Truth About Candles
Tuesday, 09 April 2013 00:53
Maneka Gandhi
Did you know that the word ceremony comes from the Latin word cermonius, meaning "the person who carries a wax candle at public rituals”?
In India the oil lamp and the lantern are still items of every rural household but no middle class and upward home is without its candles. From being the most important sources of electricity replacement, candles in India have become big business for exporters and the domestic accessories market - restaurants, birthdays, gifts, religious, aroma therapy etc.( In 2003 US domestic sales , which have been growing at 10-25 % a year since 1990 (with scented candles growing at 22% and becoming 54% of the whole candle sales) reached $2.3 billion ) of which imports were $486 million.
It is time for you to know what a candle does before you buy the next one.

Why do drycleaned clothes smell awful ?
Monday, 08 April 2013 00:34
Maneka Gandhi
The beginning and end of winter is a busy time for drycleaners. Silks and woolens are brought out of trunks, sent for drycleaning and then, at the end of three months, cleaned and put away again. About 22% clothes drycleaned in India are silk and the rest woollen. The last years has seen a big boom in the industry because expensive designer clothes have become fashionable. Before, the main item drycleaned were the awful formal suits that men wore to office. Now women's clothes outnumber mens’ with a ratio of 10 to 1.
Why do drycleaned clothes smell awful when they come back from the shop. What is the cocktail of chemicals used: Ammonia, Benzene, Formaldehde, Perchloroethylene, Toluene, Trichloroethylene, Carbobtetrachloride and Xylene. They may clean your clothes but what do they do to you?

Are humans the only species that faint?
Sunday, 07 April 2013 00:25
Maneka Gandhi
I have fainted only once in my life – half way through a normal conversation with friends. My husband was so frightened he called my mother and I woke to find my head on her lap. No one has ever figured out why it happened. I have had one panic attack – in which I simply could not breathe – related to losing my passport abroad just before a flight home!
A faint is caused when the brain is abruptly deprived of oxygen and blood. One reason is physical: when we stand up too fast, for instance. The cause of the emotionally triggered faint has yet to be discovered – men who faint when their wives are delivering a baby, people who received news of death.
Are humans the only species that suffer from such terror that the brain shuts down? No. Animals faint as well. When animals perceive a mortal threat, they are supposed to do two things: fight or run. But they do a third as well: they faint. You know how terror feels: the pounding of the heart, the tightening of the head, the nausea and then the heart suddenly slows down and the blood pressure goes down. The brain shuts the system down by fainting. The same thing happens to the animal.
