Stop Burning Fallen Leaves – Use Them Instead

E-mail Print PDF
Burn a leaf hundreds of yards away and I can smell it immediately. My nose blocks up, my eyes water, nothing makes me feel worse. In 1989 it was one of the first things that the Environment Ministry banned. Unfortunately, even now it is fairly common to see smouldering heaps of leaves in every city and town by government gardeners, municipal sweepers and house owners themselves in the corners of arks and at the ends of roads. In farms this is extremely common – farmers don’t just burn their own leaves but they burn the fallen leaves on the edges of their farms which come down from trees owned by the government. This unmonitored burning usually kills the roadside trees.

The forest departments set fire routinely to their forests in the name of leaf burning. This not only kills all he small animals and insects, it is 70% of the reasons for all the raging forest fires in the country that takes thousands of acres of forest at a time. In my own constituency Pilibhit, I spent most of my time in summer putting out forest fires started by the forest rangers. They remain unconcerned by the fact that all the saplings die and the wild boar, monkeys and neelgai come into the fields because their food has been burnt. Don’t burn leaves. And don’t let others do it. It is a very wasteful and dangerous practice.

Housefly How to Deal With Them

E-mail Print PDF
Houseflies are a nuisance. They exist for lizards, spiders and frogs to eat them. Some birds eat the housefly larva when they look like little worms. They are important in the ecological food chain because they break down waste materials since this is their main diet in all stages of their life.
The large compound eye of the housefly with around 2000 lens allows these tiny creatures to see all things in all directions. But even though the housefly can see in all directions and has a remarkable sense of smell, they must land on an item to taste it - one reason that the housefly is considered such a pest.
The standard ways for them to get out of your house is to use a chemical spray or a flyswatter or those awful flypapers which have a sweet sticky base. Houseflies are attracted by the smell and then stick to them and die after a long time. These look ugly and are very cruel.

Here are some easy ways to keep flies out of the house. The best way is to keep outside clean of any kind of filth. The organic garbage like any food remains or animal faeces should go into a covered dustbin and the drain near the house should be covered as houseflies might lay eggs on them. The next best way is to screen all the door and windows with a mesh.
