The Concept
It used to be a tradition to say a small prayer of thanks before each meal. Few of us do this anymore. Now there is a wonderful way in which to combine the pleasure of a good meal with a good deed.
PFA has initiated a fundraising scheme that generates funds and awareness for animal welfare without placing the burden of support on a single corporate or individual. This initiative works through the hospitality industry and we seek the participation of leading hotels and restaurants. This scheme costs its restaurant participants nothing but does earn them public goodwill. It earns money through small voluntary contributions of Rs.10/- from restaurant patrons. Rs.10 is a truly small amount for someone able to pay upwards of Rs.500 for a meal, but adds up to make an enormous difference to the lives of India’s animals and those who depend on them.
How It Works : Simple and Effective
PFA has created tent cards, which outline the work we do, explain the scheme and request the customer for a contribution of Rs.10/- which they are free to refuse. Should they not wish to contribute, they may simply inform the waiter. Unless they refuse, the amount is added to the bill. The tent cards are supplied to the restaurant and regularly restocked by PFA. The restaurant places these cards on each table. The billing software is adjusted to include an entry that may be marked CHARITY or any other term denoting the scheme. This entry comes beneath all the taxes and a flat amount of Rs.10 is automatically added to each bill. Should a customer express his unwillingness to pay this amount, the entry is cancelled. The restaurant is not expected to explain or persuade. The tent card has provided the information and offered the customer a choice. If the restaurant wants, PFA can put the same information on a poster as well for greater visibility. PFA and the participating restaurant sign a contract formalizing the arrangement. The amount collected by the restaurant is turned over monthly to PFA vide a cheque made out to People for Animals. PFA collects this cheque in the first week of every month and provides a written acknowledgement for the amount collected by the restaurant on behalf of PFA.
No Tax Implications
Since the contribution is not a revenue to the restaurant, it is not liable for any taxes. The money is turned over to PFA, which acknowledges its receipt and accounts for its utilization. As a non-profit organization, PFA is exempt from tax under sections 11 and 12. All contributions to PFA are in turn eligible for tax exemption under sections 80G and 35AC.
