NAGPUR: An adoption camp for stray puppies has been organized at Maharajbagh Zoo by People for Animals (PFA) between 10am and 2pm on Sunday. The camp is an event to mark National Animal Welfare Fortnight being held from January 14 to 30, as announced by the Animal Welfare Board of India ( AWBI).

"About 50 stray puppies aged between one and one-and-a-half-months can be adopted at this camp for free. We want people to take home canine of Indian breed instead of buying expensive western breed dogs," said Karishma Galani of PFA.
The dogs adopted at the camp will be given free vaccinations and licence. PFA will be also giving baskets and dog leashes as gifts to their owners.
A fancy dress competition on the theme vegetarianism will be also held on the same day. "Students up to 15 years old can take part in the competition. We are also planning to organize a discussion of pet owners later during the fortnight," said Galani.

According to the organizers, it is much easier to maintain Indian dogs. "In today's busy lives a pet fills a lot of love in the home. Dogs are the best gift that people can take back home," said Galani.

PFA Nagpur Report

The maintainance of the shelter includes the cleanliness, the cooking and the feeding of the children. It is looked after by Ms. Pooja Titre (Voluntary service), Mrs. Lalita Pillai (Caretaker-Paid Rs.4500/- pm), Mr. Vishal Awasthi (Voluntary service) and the staff of NMC.

The Veterinary section is taken care of again by Mrs. Lalita Pillai, Mr. Rajesh Pillai, Mr. Vishal Awasthi, the NMC staff and myself. I receive the calls for ill/sick/injured animals per day and divert the addresses to the ambulance driver. Mr. R. Pillai, accompanies the ambulance everyday to the MAFSU(Maharashtra Animal and Fisheries Science University) veterinary Polyclinic takes care to see that the animals are treated and taken care of well. Later they are brought to the shelter and hereafter are daily taken to the hospital till they either recover or succumb. The caretaker and Mr. Awasthi maintain a daily record of the animals in/out of the shelter. Dr. Upadhyaye (contact No. 09922999058) one of the best surgeons in Nagpur takes care to see that our critical cases are treated well.

The ground work is done by me after 4pm when the ambulance gets deposited in the workshop. I hire autos and attend the left over cases. These cases if not urgent are treated the following day and if critical are taken care of immediately with reference from some vet with payment. This problem has occurred because we had appointed a vet, Dr. Nitin Shende on a monthly payment of Rs. 8500/-pm. However later we had to discontinue his services as he was neither sincere towards his job nor to our children. Presently we are searching for a good vet who is ready to visit the Shelter Home. I shall also send a brief report of the accounting, stock maintainnace and the puppy adoption in a couple of weeks.

On an average we rescue almost 10-15 animals per day which includes monkeys, langoors, donkeys, cows, calves, dogs, goats, birds and dogs.

Newsflash

he word soul comes from the Latin Anima. The word animal comes from anima too. Animals carry the soul of the earth in them. They represent Nature and Nature is no loving goddess who forgives transgressions. She is Kali, the unforgiving. You kill , she punishes. She does not do any trades and she demands no innocents as sacrifice.

If we could all understand that , so many things would fall into place. As a friend and neighbour of Nepal , as one who knows and respects her people , I feel I have the right to write this article to beg all of you to abandon the killing of animals at the Gadimai festival later this month.

The Gadimai Mela takes place every five years in Bariyarpur, Bara district and is scheduled for November 24. The word fair should mean something of joy. Something you take your children to. An occasion where you show your family and world love and get love in return.
